The Ned Rig I Actually Fish on the Fox River

A current-driven Ned-rig system for bridge pylons and other vertical structure on the Fox River.

My Fox River Ned setup is an ultralight rod, 4-pound fluorocarbon, a snag-resistant head and a short plastic cast tight to bridge pylons and other vertical structure. Once the bait is in the right place, I mostly leave it alone and let the river move it.

I fish a Ned rig around every bridge pylon I stop at on the Fox River. It gets the first cast, usually several of them, before I try anything else. That probably makes the Ned sound more versatile in my fishing than it really is. I rarely throw one down a random stretch of bank, through vegetation or across a broad piece of bottom simply because the fishing has slowed. Most of my Ned fishing happens within a few feet of concrete.

The setup has become fairly specific. I use a 6-foot-8 ultralight rod with 4-pound fluorocarbon, an offset jig head somewhere around 1/8 to 3/16 ounce and, most often, a 2.75-inch Z-Man Finesse TRD in Coppertreuse. From the kayak, I make a short cast tight to the upstream edge of a pylon and let the current carry the bait alongside it. I keep almost no tension on the line and add almost no movement with the rod. I am not trying to feel the jig bump along the bottom. Most of the time I do not know whether it has touched bottom, and I do not particularly care.

I was never taught how to fish a Ned rig. I bought some, started throwing them around the Fox and gradually stopped doing much to them. A good cast followed by very little interference kept producing fish. Eventually the presentation became less about working the bait and more about putting it where the river could work it for me.

The current is the retrieve.

A Ned Doesn't Have to Stay on Bottom

The modern shorthand often treats a Ned as a little bottom bait: cast it out, let it settle, then hop, drag or shake it back. The rig takes its name from Kansas angler Ned Kehde, whose Midwest-finesse system was broader than that. Kehde regularly described small jigs fished above the bottom and what he called “no-feel” retrieves, where constant contact with bottom or cover was not the objective. I knew none of that when I started fishing one. Around Fox River bridge pylons, I simply found that doing less worked.

Once the jig is beside the structure, I let moving water supply most of its travel. A small bait, a light head and very little input from the rod are enough; the river moves it through the water for me.

There is a biological reason the presentation is at least plausible. Smallmouth bass in flowing rivers have been observed drift-feeding, holding in comparatively lower-velocity water and intercepting food carried past them by the current. Other work examining smallmouth movement and energetics in river systems reinforces the importance of current breaks and the energetic cost of occupying faster water. None of that tells me what a Fox River smallmouth thinks a Coppertreuse TRD represents. I have no idea whether it looks like a minnow, an invertebrate or simply something small enough to eat. I know that putting one tight to a pylon and allowing the current to carry it past has worked often enough that I keep doing it.

Fishing a Bridge Pylon

Water around a bridge pylon is considerably more complicated than it appears from the kayak. Flow separates around the upstream face, accelerates around the sides and creates slower water downstream, with seams between water moving at different velocities. Scour can change the bottom immediately around the structure. Those hydraulics influence both where a smallmouth can hold and where the Ned travels, although I do not try to decipher every eddy before making a cast.

I normally approach one side of the pylon and position the kayak roughly alongside its middle. The cast goes toward the upstream edge. I am generally two or three kayak lengths away, roughly 20 to 30 feet, with about 25 feet being typical. From there, distance means very little compared with placement. I want the jig within inches of the concrete, and I do not mind if the cast actually clips the pylon.

Once the bait enters the water, I stop doing much of anything. I maintain just enough tension to keep the line from lying on the surface and watch the entire visible length of fluorocarbon as the current carries the jig across and in front of the kayak. There is no countdown, and I do not intentionally hop, shake or drag it during the productive part of the drift. Extra manipulation around concrete, rock and whatever debris has accumulated there also creates more opportunities to snag the hook. If the river is already moving the bait through the water I want to fish, I would rather let it.

A bite usually announces itself through the line. When a smallmouth takes the Ned, in my experience it goes somewhere with it. The line changes direction or starts moving in a way the drift cannot explain. I have never had a pylon smallmouth pick up the bait and simply sit there. A jig that merely stops is more likely to be hung on something. When that happens, I try a small hop in the opposite direction from the line, hoping to pull the head away before it wedges itself more securely.

Eventually the passive drift runs its course. I then bring the jig back with gentle upward snaps, taking up line as it falls. That portion of the presentation produces fish too. The first upward movement has been particularly productive often enough that I pay attention to it. I once watched a smallmouth follow the Ned upward and eat it surprisingly close to the surface. Maybe fish sometimes follow the bait during the drift and react when it changes direction. Maybe the movement simply puts the bait in front of a fish I did not know was there. I do not know. I fish the return because fish have eaten it.

I normally make two or three casts along each side of a pylon. For the downstream face, I move to roughly a 45-degree position off a back corner and try to land the jig right against the rear edge, again allowing the current to carry it away from the concrete. That gives a pylon roughly six to nine Ned casts before I try something else.

An Ultralight Because I Like Fishing One

My Ned outfit is a 6-foot-8 Bass Pro Shops Panfish Elite ultralight, fast-action spinning rod paired with a Johnny Morris CarbonLite 2.0 1500-size reel. The rod is rated for 2- to 6-pound line and lures from 1/32 to 3/16 ounce. The reel is filled with 4-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon tied directly to the jig.

None of that should be read as a prescription for Ned fishing. The technique does not require an ultralight rod, and plenty of dedicated Ned equipment is considerably heavier. A light or medium-light spinning rod would be a perfectly sensible choice. The Panfish Elite became my dedicated Ned rod partly because it keeps the presentation from occupying the medium-light spinning outfit in my kayak and partly because a smallmouth on an ultralight rod is a terrific fight.

There is a measurable cost to that choice. A 2025 study in Fisheries Management and Ecology compared ultralight and medium spinning tackle for smallmouth bass. The work was conducted by researchers from Carleton University, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with funding from the Anderson Family Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Fish caught on ultralight equipment took substantially longer to land: an average of 37 seconds versus 14 seconds on medium gear, with the difference increasing as fish size increased.

I am giving up some ability to land a fish quickly by choosing the ultralight. I probably lose some fish that I would land with a stronger rod and heavier line as well. For the size of smallmouth I normally encounter on the Fox, I am comfortable with that trade, but I would not argue that the ultralight is technically superior.

Occasionally a fish makes the limitation obvious. A roughly 16-inch channel catfish once ate the Ned and bent the Panfish Elite into almost a complete U. For much of the fight I thought I had hooked an exceptional smallmouth. By the time I realized I probably had something else, I was mostly wondering whether the rod was going to survive. It did, and I landed the catfish. Freshwater drum have put a similar load on the outfit.

With a smallmouth, I start with the drag fairly loose and adjust it early in the fight. I tighten it enough to stop a sustained run away from the kayak while letting the fish move laterally or come toward me. Smallmouth change direction repeatedly, and I am not trying to stop every movement. I keep the rod loaded, maintain pressure and manage the direction of the fish rather than trying to overpower it.

I have also settled on straight 4-pound InvizX rather than braid with a fluorocarbon leader. I have fished the braid-and-leader arrangement and found no practical advantage for what I am doing here. The straight fluorocarbon has been reliable, I have never broken a fish off with it, and one knot between the reel and the jig is simpler.

A Snag-Resistant Head and a TRD

I use either a Z-Man NedlockZ EWG or an Owner Block Head Offset. I do not have a meaningful preference between the two. I generally buy heads around 1/8 to 3/16 ounce and use whichever one I happen to grab from the box.

There is no careful current calculation behind that choice. I am not selecting a head to maintain bottom contact, and I do not routinely change weights as the current changes. Both sizes are light enough for the rod and have worked in the places I fish. If I have developed some unconscious preference for one under particular conditions, it has not been strong enough for me to notice.

The offset hook matters more. I rig the plastic with the hook point skin-hooked back into it. There is plenty around a bridge pylon for an exposed hook to find, and I want to be able to put the bait directly against the structure without spending the morning breaking off jig heads. Traditional Midwest-finesse fishing has often used very small exposed hooks, and there is nothing inherently wrong with them. The offset head simply fits where I fish better.

The hookset is equally restrained. When the line moves, I lift the rod and apply pressure. I do not snap it backward. The hook point comes through the plastic as the rod loads, and that has been sufficient. With an ultralight rod and 4-pound line, I have never seen much reason to add a violent hookset to the process.

Most of the time, the plastic is a 2.75-inch Z-Man Finesse TRD in Coppertreuse. I sometimes substitute a 2.5-inch Berkley MaxScent Lil' Trooper in Green Pumpkin when I want a more obvious craw shape, and I occasionally fish a Coppertreuse Z-Man Fuzzy TRD simply because I have them and like trying different things. I cannot point to a condition in which either consistently catches more fish than the ordinary TRD.

The TRD's buoyant ElaZtech material and durability are useful characteristics in a bait that spends time drifting, rubbing concrete and occasionally being pulled out of trouble. I am less certain that any particular property explains why fish eat it. Coppertreuse has produced consistently for me, so it remains the default. I also buy chartreuse jig heads when I can find them because I like the way they look. As far as I can tell, the fish are indifferent.

When a Drift Produces

While I am prospecting a group of pylons, I generally drift with the current and reposition the kayak for each piece of structure. The Ned goes first. If two or three casts on each side and behind the pylon produce nothing, I will usually make a couple of casts with a swim jig before moving on. If none of the pylons produces, I may cycle through them once more.

A fish changes the routine. Once a particular drift produces, I position the kayak more deliberately and anchor so I can repeat it. On one afternoon I caught four smallmouth from the same roughly 20-foot pylon on essentially the same drift. There was little reason to leave while that continued to work.

All of the bass I have caught from these pylon presentations have been smallmouth. I have never caught a largemouth from one, despite catching largemouth elsewhere in the same stretch of river. I do not have enough experience to turn that into a claim about how the two species use bridge structure. It is simply what has happened so far. Catfish and freshwater drum have also eaten the Ned around the pylons, sometimes providing a considerably different fight than the one I expected when the line started moving.

I occasionally use the same presentation along steep, wall-like shorelines where current runs beside a sharp vertical edge, but bridge pylons remain its primary job. I do not routinely throw the Ned through grass, work it across lily pads or use it to cover broad stretches of shallow bank. On the Fox, it usually stays tied to the ultralight until I reach concrete and current again.
